Charges have been laid against a 27-year-old Taber man for an assault on the father of pro hockey player Devin Setoguchi.

Taber Police Service has laid aggravated assault and assault charges against Cory Russell after an assault in a Taber licensed establishment back on Dec.29. He was arrested on Sunday and released on bail, with conditions to appear before a Justice of the Peace in Taber Provincial Court on Jan. 27.
On Dec. 29 at approximately 1:30 am, Taber police responded to a complaint of an altercation in progress. On arrival, police located a Taber man unconscious, lying on the floor. According to police, witnesses allege – supported by video of the event -that an altercation had taken place previous to police being called and it appeared the two parties had settled the dispute. A few minutes later, the same two were having a discussion when the 27-year-old man suddenly struck the victim with a closed fist, according to police. The victim, Dale Setoguchi, then fell to the floor, struck his head and was unconscious. Another male patron went to check on the welfare of the victim, and was subsequently assaulted by the same 27-year-old man. The man fled the bar prior to police arrival.
Police said the victim refused treatment, however, and a short while later, it was determined the victim suffered injuries sufficient enough to warrant the suspect being charged with aggravated assault.
Setoguchi was in Calgary hospital but has since returned home, and is recovering from a serious concussion.
Russell faces one count of aggravated assault and one count of assault.
The younger Setoguchi signed with the Calgary Flames in August and played with the team until late November when he cleared waivers and was assigned to the Adirondack Flames of the American Hockey League.
